A Drive in the Country

Spent a couple of hours driving around with Goody Two Shoes yesterday. We'd had a little bit of snow, followed by half an inch of ice on Friday. The roads were clear...for the most part, so we headed for Frostburg. Two miles short of Frostburg, the truck took a right and we headed out Parkersburg Road, where I shot this barbed wire fence.

Country Cemetery on Mile Lane, between Mt. Savage and Wellersburg.

My Grandparents farmhouse on the Palo Alto Road, above Wellersburg.

An icy stream down from the farm. Can you say frigid, boys and girls.

Covered bridge, near PA. Route 96. This is the best angle I could get without getting in the water.

A couple of shots of Stanton's Mill. For years I've been meaning to take a picture of this place. Kept putting it off for some reason.

Horsing Around

Me 'n Goody Two Shoes took a drive yesterday. Originally, we were going to drive up to Bellefonte, but we got a late start...okay, we slept in. Switching to plan B, we headed for Garrett County, where there is supposed to be snow...hey, it's Western Maryland's winter playground. But the weatherman goofed...again. Still we had a nice, sunny day. The perfect day for hitting a few of the back roads, like Cove Road, Bear Creek Road, and Sand Flat Road. Got pretty lucky and I think there's even a Wordless Wednesday photo in there somewhere. Soooo, here we go.

We started out at the scenic overlook on Rt. 219 where I shot this farm down on the Cove Road.

Here's the same farm, but from down on the Cove Road.

St. John's Lutheran Church.

And this muddy fellow, also on the Cove Road. Do horses really talk to cows?

Next, we swung down Bear Creek Road, but the only photo opportunity we found was this area of Bear Creek.

After lunch at UNO's at Deep Creek Lake, we shopped a little in Oakland, drove through Deer Park, and then as an afterthought we headed up Sand Flat Road and got a real treat. We found these beauties enjoying a little sun after a roll in the mud.

The big fella was really enjoying the sun and solitude. Can you say, zero stress?

Here's another shot of the big fella.

Next, these two decided they wanted on camera.

Time for a mid-afternoon snack.

A nice, tight shot of the old gray gelding.

At this point, the show really began, for me anyway. This brown and white mare came right over to me and was nice enough to pose for the following photos. She even let me pet her. For those photos you'll have to go over to A Mother's Minute and check out Goody Two Shoes post.

This one is my favorite. Isn't she a beauty. Arrrgh, I sound like the Crocodile guy, but without the accent. Still, what a beautiful animal.

My second favorite.

Here she is with her posse in the background. Wait til you see the shot Goody Two Shoes got of this beauty with the old gray gelding...I think you could say they know each other. So hop on over to A Mother's Minute.

How I Spent My Weekend

Shot the scenic train on Saturday morning.

Went up to the Homecoming game in the afternoon.

Our team won 33-14. They're the boys in white. Go Alco!

Had fun with some horses down on Town Creek Road on Sunday.

Remembering the veterans. All gave some...some gave all.

Backroads, the only way to see America.

Like to see what Bob Vila could do with this place.

Another place that has seen better days.

All in all, not a bad way to spend the weekend. I even made time for my Steelers. They won, by the way, over the hated Cleveland Browns 31-28. And the Packers keep rolling along. They beat up on Minnesota 34-0. Now if Dale Jr. could just get a win. I'm so sick of NASCAR at the moment, what with the same guys hogging all the wins. But that's another story...and another post.

Green Acres is the Place to Be

Between blogging and reading Country Magazine I read so many stories and see so many photos of life in the country, that I get antsy and reach for my camera. Having been raised in the country and having farmers for grandparents, I welcome any opportunity to get back out in the country.

Yesterday, Goody Two Shoes and myself took a little drive in the Pennsylvania countryside. Taking backroads we wound our way through Hyndman, Madly Hollow, Bedford, St. Clairsville, Baker's Summit, Roaring Spring, Holidaysburg, and finally, Altoona--where the Cracker Barrel was. We love eating at Cracker Barrel. Along the way, we found a dairy farm near St. Clairsville and I took these photos. It was just a beautiful day, the colors were beautiful. All-in-all, a perfect day.

The girls doing brunch. We'll call them: Ethel, Patty, Maxine, and Laverne.

What are you looking at?

Got milk? We do...sucker!

Kibble 'n bits, kibbles 'n bits.

Eating...it's what I do.

There were horses in the next pasture. After I'd worn out my welcome with the bovines I simply walked across the road.

This fella came galloping up through the field until he saw my camera. He then decided to graze where he was and ignore the silly man with the camera.

Going back to the other horses, I found them to be somewhat camera shy as well. Either that or they were simply content in the shade.

But sometimes a Camera Totin' Idiot gets lucky. This beauty, we'll call her Sadie, decided to come out and work on her tan.

'Do you like my profile?' she seems to be asking.

Goodbye, Sadie. I'll be back in a couple of weeks when the leaves change.
